I’m going to start a new thing for you this week. Every Friday, I am going to post a little bit of doggy wisdom, hoping to help someone out there with their training, their dogs health and maybe even how to better photograph your dog. So let me know what you would like to read about or if you have some great tips to share with us!
Because the main part of all that wisdom is not gonna come from me. I’m in no way wise and part of why I am doing this is to keep myself learning new things about my furry best friends.
So here it goes, the first little bit of doggy wisdom comes from dog trainer Victoria Schade. I am currently reading her book “Bonding with your dog” (about which I will share a little more once I’m all the way through). One of the little tricks she shares is the “arm-cross sit”. It’s a fun thing to teach, just to do something new, and it might even help you with a nasty little behavior problem.
Do you have a puppy that likes to jump up on your guests when they walk in the door?
Try this: teach your dog to sit when you cross your arms. According to Victoria, dogs have a far easier time learning non-verbal cues. To teach this to your dog she suggests to get your dogs attention and then stand in front of him with your arms crossed. Most likely he will look at you wondering what is going on and at some point sit down. As soon as he does so use your way of telling him he has done right. A calm “good boy”, a clicker, whatever you use, followed by a yummy treat. Plenty repetition should make learning this little trick a breeze. And once he’s got it down, let your family member and guests do the same.
So why not give this a try this weekend?

Still looking for a christmas gift for your pup or the pet lover on your list? I’m always on the hunt for toys, treats and other dog apparel that cannot be found at your local pet super store. And when it comes to christmas toys, Rudy is my new favorite. You might have seen him before in some images of the past christmas sessions. I bought him as a prop and I don’t think I will give it to my vicious little puppies who tear up even the “tuff toys” within a day.
Rudy and other lovely (eco friendly) toys are made by West Paw Design. I found him in Manhattan at Claire & Harley’s.
What are your favorite dog products? Send me your suggestions and if they are chosen to be featured here you might soon be receiving a doggy portrait gift certificate!

You know how we always look for that special something? For that piece of clothing that no one else has, that little accessory that makes us stand out? That gift that no one else gives? Maybe I shouldn’t generalize, maybe you are not like that but I am. You might call me obsessive that way.
So, when it comes to my puppy, I want him to stand out, too. I’m not very much into sweaters or any other kind of canine clothing. But there is still that collar, that is a must for every dog because of the massive amounts of jingling tags they have to wear nowadays. So I like to make my puppy stand out with his collar (although he has been called fruity or looking like a fairy… what do those guys know about fashion, anyway!?!?).
I got mine from this store on etsy, where lots of people offer awesome handmade things. Even cutstom made, if you like. Where do you get your one-of-a-kind dog accessories?
Submit your favorite pet products and if you find them featured here you might soon be receiving a doggy portrait gift card.

The summer is back in town. I have checked and this weekend was actually warmer here in Kansas than it was in Texas (where I’d like to be during the winter). Temperatures in the 70’s led us to a play date at the River. More pictures of the lovely Bella and Missy can be expected soon. Here’s a sneak peak of what I believe is the shot of the day: Mac stealing sticks from other dogs!
And once my own two puppies pooped out at home I went to the lovely Claire & Harley’s to get some christmasy props. But they will remain a suprise until our christmas photo shoots start in December. Be sure to book your session for some unique christmas cards, gift tags or wall deco!

The animal shelter in Wamego has new puppies. Chow mix babies that look just like teddy bears! This little girl is Chloe. She is way too cute to be living in a kennel. The other four have a lovely foster home but would really like to be adopted, too. You can meet all of them this weekend at the adoption event at Petco in Manhattan!
