Kennel Training
Posted on December 18, 2009
My (not so young) pup likes to chew up stuff while I’m gone. I can try to not let anything laying around, he will still find something to chew on, even if it is his own bed. Now, I’m no dog trainer, but after researching separation anxiety and talking to people who have dogs with separation anxiety I’m pretty certain that is not the case. So my solution for now is to restrain the dogs to one room (without much to chew on except their toys) for when I’m gone.
But, this whole thing has led me to a question. I’m from Germany and know that very few dogs are ever kennel trained over there. Being as “PETA” as we are you even hear lots of people condemning your for “imprisoning” your dog. Now I don’t necessarily agree with that, I hear lots of dog trainers with plausible reasons, but being from a country where kenneling is not the norm I am a little more sensitive to these kind of issues. I also cringe when I see one-horse-trailers on american roads, which are extremely narrow compared to their european equivalent.
So all personal opinions aside, I am just curious how many of you have their dogs kennel trained? Feel free to also leave your personal opinions in the comment box below. My mind is wide open to what you have to say!

Both Max and Trixie are crate trained. It is safer for everyone if they are in their crates during the day because it keeps them from getting into something that they shouldn’t.
Crate training is also great for the car, because having a crated dog in the car is a lot safer for all involved. We don’t always put them in their crates in the car, but do when we are going on long trips, especially.
Crating our dogs gives them a sense of “home” when we are away from home. They know what is expected of them. They also LOVE their crates. They will sometimes choose to hang out in their crates on their own (with the doors open).
I agree with everything Christi said. Our dog will hang out in his kennel sometimes. It’s his little home. He is too big for the one he has now, we’ve tried to get a bigger one but he just won’t go into it, so the door stays open all the time.
Kennel training was one of the best things I ever dd for my dogs. Although my dogs are older now and the kennel is not necessary, they both hang out in there almost every day, and go there when sick, scared, or just want to chill out. Kennel training has been very helpful with vet visits and traveling. Not to mention saving my books, furniture, and shoes from chewing puppies. I suggest kennel training to everyone I know.
